Best EV Charging Solutions in Kenya in 2026

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly visible on Kenyan roads, and one of the biggest factors supporting their growth is the expansion of charging infrastructure.

Kenya’s electric-mobility sector has grown rapidly in recent years. Industry figures reported in May 2026 put the number of electric vehicles on Kenyan roads at more than 35,000, up from about 1,200 in 2023.

At the same time, electricity consumption from EV charging is rising. Kenya Power reported that 8.43 million kWh of electricity was used for EV charging in 2025, compared with 2.92 million kWh in 2024 — an increase of 188%.

This growth means Kenyan EV owners now have more options for keeping their vehicles charged.

But which charging solution is best?

The answer depends on the type of EV you drive, where you live, how far you travel and whether you need charging at home, work or on the road.

What Are the Main EV Charging Solutions in Kenya?

Kenyan EV users can generally choose from four main charging approaches:

  • Home charging
  • Public AC charging
  • DC fast charging
  • Battery swapping

Each option has different advantages.

For private EV owners, home charging can be the most convenient because the vehicle can charge overnight.

For drivers covering long distances, public fast-charging networks are more important.

For electric motorcycle riders, battery swapping can dramatically reduce waiting time.

1. Home EV Chargers

For people who have access to parking with electricity, a home charger can be one of the most convenient EV charging solutions.

Instead of visiting a charging station every time the battery needs power, you can plug in when you arrive home and charge while the vehicle is parked.

Advantages

  • Convenient
  • No need to queue at public charging stations
  • Useful for overnight charging
  • Can reduce dependence on public chargers
  • Suitable for daily commuting

However, installing a home charger requires proper electrical planning.

Kenya’s EV charging guidelines cover the installation and operation of public and private charging infrastructure, including requirements around safe and reliable charging systems.

Before installing a charger, an EV owner should therefore work with a qualified electrical professional and ensure the home’s electrical system can safely handle the equipment.

Who should choose home charging?

Home charging is particularly suitable for:

  • Daily commuters
  • Homeowners with dedicated parking
  • EV owners who drive predictable distances
  • People who can charge overnight

2. Kenya Power’s E-Mobility Charging Infrastructure

Kenya Power is becoming an important player in Kenya’s EV charging ecosystem.

The company has been expanding its involvement in electric mobility and introduced an e-mobility electricity tariff.

In June 2026, Kenya Power said cumulative revenue from EV charging had reached KSh 382 million between July 2023 and April 2026, with Nairobi accounting for KSh 271.9 million. The company also said revenue from the e-mobility sector could reach KSh 5.9 billion by 2030.

Kenya Power’s growing involvement matters because widespread EV adoption requires not only chargers but also electricity infrastructure capable of supporting them.

The company is also onboarding customers using electricity to charge EVs under the e-mobility tariff.

Kenya Power’s involvement could help:

  • Expand charging infrastructure
  • Improve access to electricity for EV charging
  • Support commercial charging operators
  • Encourage investment in e-mobility
  • Develop a more organised charging ecosystem

3. Roam Charging Hubs and Roam Points

Roam Electric has developed one of Kenya’s most visible charging networks, particularly for electric motorcycles.

Its network includes Roam Hubs and Roam Points.

Roam says its Hubs provide fast charging, battery rentals, maintenance and support, while Roam Points provide self-service charging with mobile-payment and app-based payment options.

Roam has also introduced a universal fast-charging solution for light electric vehicles.

The company says its Roam Point technology can provide 10–20 km of range in under five minutes, depending on the vehicle and charging conditions. The system uses Type 6 connectors and is designed for compatible light electric vehicles including two-wheelers, tuk-tuks and light passenger vehicles.

The company says its charging network is expanding across Nairobi and surrounding areas.

For electric motorcycle users, this makes Roam particularly interesting because charging is combined with battery rental and support services.

4. Battery Swapping for Electric Motorcycles

Battery swapping is different from conventional EV charging.

Instead of waiting for a battery to recharge, a rider exchanges a depleted battery for a fully charged one.

This can be particularly useful for commercial motorcycle riders who cannot afford long periods of downtime.

Kenya’s e-mobility charging infrastructure includes a significant number of battery-swapping stations, particularly for electric two-wheelers. An industry white paper reported that most of Kenya’s charging infrastructure was concentrated in urban areas, with Nairobi accounting for a large majority of operational stations.

5. BasiGo Charging Infrastructure

BasiGo is another important name in Kenya’s electric-mobility ecosystem, particularly in electric public transport.

BasiGo has charging facilities supporting its electric bus operations in Nairobi.

For the average private-car owner, BasiGo’s network is less relevant than passenger-EV charging networks, but its infrastructure demonstrates how charging can be integrated into commercial fleets.

Fleet charging is likely to become increasingly important as companies transition delivery vehicles, buses and other commercial transport to electric power.

6. KenGen EV Charging Projects

KenGen is also investing in EV charging infrastructure.

In 2026, KenGen issued a tender for the supply and installation of three EV charging systems at its locations in Nairobi, Naivasha and Kisumu to support its electric fleet. The tender specified different charging requirements, including CCS2 and GB/T connections.

This is important because it demonstrates that EV charging is moving beyond private companies and into larger institutional and fleet applications.

KenGen’s investment also highlights an important issue for Kenyan EV buyers:

Connector compatibility matters.

Before buying a charger or EV, confirm which charging connector your vehicle uses.

7. Public Fast Charging for Long-Distance Travel

One of the biggest challenges facing EV adoption is long-distance travel.

A driver travelling between Nairobi and another major city needs confidence that charging will be available along the route.

Kenya’s charging infrastructure is still developing, and industry research has highlighted the need for strategically placed fast-charging corridors along highways and peri-urban areas.
