East Africa’s startup ecosystem is set to get a new platform for discovering and connecting early-stage companies with investors, corporations, technology companies and other ecosystem partners.
TechMoran has opened nominations for the inaugural StartupEast Conference & Awards, which will take place on December 3, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya.
The initiative is targeting young startups across East Africa that are building innovative products and services but may not yet have the visibility associated with major funding rounds or established technology brands.
Startup Nominations Are Open
TechMoran is inviting founders, investors, customers, corporate leaders, ecosystem organizations and members of the technology community to nominate startups they believe deserve greater recognition.
Eligible startups must:
- Be based in or operating across East Africa
- Be less than eight years old
- Have raised less than $2 million
- Be building an innovative product or service
- Demonstrate potential for growth and scalability
Startups with prototypes, minimum viable products, early customers or initial market traction are particularly relevant to the initiative.
The nomination categories cover sectors including artificial intelligence, fintech, health technology, agritech, climate technology, enterprise software, commerce, logistics, mobility and education.
Founders can nominate their own companies, while investors, customers and ecosystem participants can also put forward startups they believe have strong potential.
Why Early-Stage Startup Visibility Matters
Raising capital is often viewed as one of the biggest milestones for a startup, but funding alone does not determine whether a company will succeed.
Early-stage founders also need access to customers, experienced mentors, technology partners, investors and business networks.
This is particularly important for startups that have developed a promising product but have not yet attracted significant funding or media attention.
StartupEast is designed to address part of this visibility gap by identifying companies at an earlier stage of their development.
According to TechMoran Co-Founder Sam Wakoba, the initiative is looking for founders who are already solving real problems and gaining early traction.
“There are founders across East Africa building real businesses, solving difficult problems and winning their first customers without necessarily having the visibility that comes with a major funding round,” Wakoba said.
Evaluation Will Go Beyond Funding
StartupEast says its evaluation process will not be based simply on how much money a company has raised.
The organizers plan to consider factors including the founder, the problem being addressed, product strength, early traction, market opportunity and scalability.
This approach could give smaller startups an opportunity to compete with companies that already have stronger visibility within the technology ecosystem.
After nominations close, selected startups will go through an evaluation and shortlisting process. Finalists will then progress to public voting and recognition during the StartupEast Conference & Awards.
StartupEast Is More Than an Awards Event
The initiative is also being developed as an ongoing startup community rather than a single annual awards ceremony.
Ahead of the December conference, StartupEast plans to organize monthly #TechNights, bringing together founders, investors, technology leaders and ecosystem partners.
The events are intended to create opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and potential commercial relationships.
For early-stage companies, these connections can be particularly valuable because growth often depends on finding the right customer, investor, partner or mentor at the right time.
“We don’t want this to be about trophies,” Wakoba said. “Recognition matters when it creates opportunity.”
Startups Across East Africa in Focus
East Africa has developed a growing technology ecosystem spanning financial services, mobile payments, agriculture, commerce, logistics, health and other sectors.
Kenya remains one of the region’s major technology hubs, while startup activity is also expanding in countries including Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
StartupEast is seeking to identify companies across this wider ecosystem rather than concentrating only on established technology hubs.
The organizers are particularly interested in startups that could become significant businesses but have not yet received widespread attention.
StartupEast Award Categories
The inaugural awards will recognize startups and founders across several categories.
These include:
- Startup of the Year
- Most Promising Startup
- Founder of the Year
- Artificial Intelligence
- Fintech
- Health Technology
- Agritech
- Climate Technology
- Enterprise Technology
The categories reflect some of the sectors attracting increasing attention from entrepreneurs, investors and technology companies across the region.
How Startups Can Participate
Founders and members of the technology ecosystem can nominate startups that are developing innovative products, solving important problems, attracting customers or demonstrating strong growth potential.
Nominations are currently open through TechMoran.
The StartupEast Conference & Awards 2026 is scheduled for December 3, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya.
What StartupEast Could Mean for Founders
For an early-stage startup, recognition is valuable when it leads to tangible opportunities.
A connection with an investor can help finance expansion. A corporate partnership can provide access to customers. A technology partner can improve infrastructure, while experienced mentors can help founders avoid costly mistakes.
That makes startup discovery platforms potentially useful beyond awards and publicity.
StartupEast is positioning itself around this broader idea: identifying promising companies early and connecting them with the people and organizations that can help them grow.
If successful, the platform could become another important meeting point between East Africa’s emerging founders and the wider technology and investment ecosystem.
